About the event

The Enmanji Buddhist Temple in Sebastopol dates back to its dedication on April 15, 1934. It was originally built to house the Manchurian exhibit in the Japanese Pavilion at the 1933 World Fair in Chicago. At the close of the fair, the building was dismantled (no nails), shipped to Sebastopol and reassembled as a Buddhist Temple to serve the Sonoma County Japanese Americans. During WWII when the Japanese Americans were incarcerated, hateful vandals tried to burn down the temple but local youths rallied and stood guard at the temple to save it.


March is Girls Month in Japan and time for the Hinamatsuri (doll festival). During our visit we will learn about this celebratory event and see a beautiful Hinamatsuri Japanese doll collection donated by the owner of The Taste for Tea in Healdsburg.
